Kids' Spring Break and babysitting

Wednesday, April 05, 2006
This past week was Spring Break for my children. I had a spectacular time getting to hang out with them when it wasn't summertime. The only thing that was stressful was the fact that I babysat my sister's children (in Cinci) from Thursday until yesterday evening.
Here are some of the highlights:
Thursday AM - arrive to find out that the whole family is SICK.
My sister and husband were heading to a deer show in Wisconsin and both were sick as heck. Pink eye, strep throat, cough, etc. Their 1.5 year old son Jonathon had been on medicine that was giving him diarrhea - while at the daycare he attends, someone failed to notice he'd soiled himself and in turn he had a diaper rash that would have made a grown man cry. So, not only is he sick with a cold, sore throat, snot dripping out of his nose --his butt is screaming sore and he keeps making it worse!
My neice wasn't quite so sick, but since she's about 4.5, she's a little better at taking care of herself and going to the potty, etc.
Friday: I had to take 4 kids to the license bureau with me because my car's plates expired on my husband's birthday, and we forgot to renew them prior to me leaving.
Saturday: Took the kids to get some new coloring books and art supplies because my niece had gotten all of hers thrown away since she couldn't stop writing on things she wasn't supposed to write on.
Sunday: Took the kids out for breakfast (alone--- me and 4 kids) and then took them to go meet my children's father so that they could head back home.. drove back to Cinci and had a long night because the tornado sirens kept going off due to the severe weather we were having.
I'm really glossing over this!! My nephew had me up at least 3 times a night. He'd fuss and I'd run in and check that he didn't go potty so that his butt would heal!
So, Monday comes along - the day my sis was supposed to be home -- well... her husband was feeling so badly that they had to go to urgent care and get more medicine. He thought he just had pink eye, and was using these eye drops that were prescribed to him -- which in turn he was allergic to. He couldn't see well enough to drive, so they ended up taking an extra day to get home.
BLAH!!!
My kids are 8 and 10. No longer babies. No longer waking me up in the middle of the night. No longer needing me to change diapers and filling up sippy cups to get "jooooos". Not that I mind taking care of the little ones, I just think that I'm out of practice - and my patience definitely wasn't what it used to be!
When my kids were 4 and 2, I was a stay at home mom.. and decided that I would babysit some of the other neighborhood children for a bit of extra money. I ended up babysitting 4 two year olds, a 3 year old and a 4 year old. (My children included in the mix). They would arrive at 6 am, and then one would arrive around 2 pm. Most of them left around 4:30 or 5 pm, then I had the last one until 11 pm. So... my day was filled with 6 children and I really didn't have a reprieve until I was asleep. I do actually think that it was a small factor in my divorce. But, I digress.

Oh well, that's enough for now.
I'm being bellowed at that dinner is getting cold.
I'll have to post more later.
Enjoy.
